چکیده

New virial black-hole mass estimates are presented for a sample of 72 AGN covering three decades in optical luminosity. Using a model in which the AGN broad-line region (BLR) has a flattened geometry, we investigate the M bh − L bulge relation for a combined 90-object sample, consisting of the AGN plus a sample of 18 nearby inactive elliptical galaxies with dynamical black-hole mass measurements. It is found that, for all reasonable mass-to-light ratios, the M bh − L bulge relation is equivalent to a linear scaling between bulge and black-hole mass. The best-fitting normalization of the M bh − M bulge relation is found to be M bh = 0.0012M bulge , in agreement with recent black-hole mass studies based on stellar velocity dispersions. Furthermore, the scatter around the M bh − L bulge relation for the full sample is found to be significantly smaller than has been previously reported (∆ log M bh = 0.39 dex). Finally, using the nearby inactive elliptical galaxy sample alone, it is shown that the scatter in the M bh − L bulge relation is only 0.33 dex, comparable to that of the M bh − σ relation. These results indicate that reliable black-hole mass estimates can be obtained for high redshift galaxies.

We analyze a sample of 32 galaxies for which a dynamical estimate of the mass of the hot stellar component, M bulge , is available. For each of these galaxies, we calculate the mass of the central black hole, M • , using the tight empirical correlation between M • and the bulge stellar velocity dispersion. The frequency function N [log(M • /M bulge)] is reasonably well described as a Gaussian w...

Recent X–ray observations of intense high–speed outflows in quasars suggest that supercritical accretion on to the central black hole may have an important effect on a host galaxy. I revisit some ideas of Silk and Rees, and assume such flows occur in the final stages of building up the black hole mass. It is now possible to model explicitly the interaction between the outflow and the host galax...

We analyze published reverberation mapping data for three Seyfert galaxies (NGC 3227, NGC 3516, and NGC 4593) to refine the mass estimate for the supermassive black hole in the center of each object. Treatment of the data in a manner more consistent with other large compilations of such masses allows us to more securely compare our results to wider samples of data, e.g., in the investigation of...

Massive black holes appear to be present in the nuclei of almost all galaxies, but their genesis and evolution are not well understood. As astrophysical black holes are completely characterized by their masses and spins, the observed joint distribution of these quantities contains important clues to their history. We examine the coevolution of mass and spin in binary merger growth scenarios. We...
